Century Villages at Cabrillo, ubicada en el oeste de Long Beach, entregó su nueva "barrera de vegetación" el 27 de abril, el Día del Árbol 2012, y agradeció al puerto de Long Beach, entre otros, por financiar el proyecto que mejorará la calidad del aire en el campus del complejo residencial. A partir del miércoles, 30 de noviembre, y durante dos semanas continuas, se establecerán restricciones para que los camiones doblen a la derecha en Harbor Plaza con dirección al sur hacia Harbor Scenic Drive, y los muelles G y J. The Gerald Desmond Bridge will be reduced by one lane on both the westbound and eastbound sides of the bridge from 8 a.m. to noon today while overhead lights are replaced. The closures will begin on the westbound side (8 a.m. – 10 a.m.), then transition to the eastbound side (10 a.m. – noon). Drivers can expect delays on the bridge and are urged to take alternative routes such as the Terminal Island Freeway.

"Faces of the Port: Remembering 100 Years," a half-hour documentary on the history of the Port of Long Beach, will get another play on the big screen on Saturday, August 27 at Granada Beach in Long Beach. The free screening, a Long Beach Sea Festival event sponsored by the Port and presented in conjunction with Alfredo's Beach Club, will also present "The Aviator." La entrada en vigencia del alza de la cuota se planeó originalmente para el 4 de julio, pero los operadores de las terminales marítimas pospusieron el aumento hasta el 1.º de agosto. La cuota de mitigación del tráfico está diseñada para promover el tráfico de camiones durante las horas de menor tráfico y tiene por fin reducir la congestión y la contaminación. Un torneo de golf organizado por el puerto de Long Beach recaudó más de $100,000 para las iniciativas de recuperación y ayuda de Japón. El puerto añadió el evento de recaudación de fondos al programa de actividades del centenario con el fin de ayudar a financiar la recuperación de Japón tras la devastación causada por el terremoto y el tsunami en marzo. As part of the Port's standard security procedures, all cargo containers are routinely screened for high-levels of radiation before they leave the terminals. As an extra layer of security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers also screen cargo offshore and on the shipping terminals with mobile radiation monitors and hand-held units. Since the events in Japan, CPB has reiterated its protocols and directed field personnel to specifically monitor maritime and air traffic from Japan.

Containerized cargo at the Port increased by 1.2 million units in 2010, the largest single increase of any seaport in the United States, according to numbers released Tuesday, January 18. The jump represented a nearly 25 percent gain over 2009, and it was the largest one-year increase in Port history.

Port terminals are operating normally Monday, November 8, following a fuel spill in the Long Beach Harbor late Sunday evening. An anchored ship was being refueled in the Outer Harbor, just southwest of Pier J, when the spill happened. The U.S. Coast Guard is working with recovery crews to clean up the spill. The incident has not impacted shipping operations.

On May 18 and 19, the U.S. Coast Guard will lead full-scale emergency response exercises in and around the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles. There will be no disruptions to Port operations, but customers, employees and neighbors are likely to witness unusual activities as early as Monday, May 17. El 2 de marzo, el Puerto de Long Beach ayudó a Metrolink a dar la bienvenida a dos de sus más nuevos vagones de pasajeros. Saturday's 8.8 magnitude earthquake in central Chile triggered a tsunami warning throughout most of the Pacific Ocean facing regions, including Southern California. The tsunami created strong currents in the Long Beach Harbor and ship traffic was halted for several hours on Saturday, but there were no reports of damages. A 2007 report showed that the Port faces a minimal risk of inundation by tsunami. Click here for report.

El 1° de febrero la Junta de Comisionados Portuarios de Long Beach aprobó en forma preliminar cerca de $9 millones en incentivos adicionales para reforzar la participación en el programa de calidad del aire "Bandera verde" y aumentar el uso del ferrocarril en el traslado de contenedores de carga procedentes de importaciones y exportaciones. Los operadores de terminales obtendrán $5.8 millones para incrementar la carga transportada por ferrocarril a través del puerto y los operarios de los navíos obtendrán $3 millones para que sus barcos disminuyan la velocidad en el puerto.

El Dr. John Kashiwabara, que formó parte de la Junta de Comisionados Portuarios del Puerto de Long Beach desde 1996 hasta 2002, ha fallecido. Tenía 88 años. El Dr. Kashiwabara era un médico de familia cuya participación cívica activa se reflejó en diversas organizaciones de Long Beach. Fue nombrado miembro de la Junta de Comisionados por él, en aquel entonces, Alcalde Beverly O'Neill de Long Beach. Se le atribuye la colaboración que brindó al Puerto para atraer inquilinos comerciantes después de que la Armada de los Estados Unidos desocupara las instalaciones locales. "El Dr. John, como lo llamábamos cariñosamente, fue un extraordinario hombre con notables cualidades", afirmó Richard D. Steinke, Director Ejecutivo del Puerto de Long Beach.

El programa de Camiones Limpios del puerto de Long Beach está rumbo a conseguir mejoras importantes en la calidad del aire y en la seguridad de las carreteras, cuando el cambio que involucra a los camiones grandes que prestan servicio a las terminales portuarias marque un hito importante el 1 de enero,2010. Para año nuevo, el Programa de Camiones Limpios habrá reducido la contaminación del aire asociada con los camiones que se encuentran en el Puerto aproximadamente al 80por ciento.

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved a $1.3 million advance payment on December 14 to the City of Long Beach to help pay for the first phase of the Colorado Lagoon Restoration Project. In search of a concept that could change the future of goods movement, the Port of Long Beach and a panel of independent experts will soon begin a thorough review of ideas offered by seven companies for a zero-emission system to transport cargo containers. The concepts were generated in response to the Port's Request for Concepts and Solutions for a Zero Emission Container Mover System (ZECMS), which was issued in June 2009.

El Puerto de Long Beach ha resuelto una demanda judicial presentada por la Asociación Americana de Camioneros (ATA), por la cual se resuelve la recusación legal definitiva para el Programa de Camiones Limpios de un año de antigüedad. Siendo una de las iniciativas medioambientales más ambiciosas del Puerto, el programa ya está reduciendo significativamente la contaminación asociada con los camiones y pretende reducir las emisiones 80 por ciento antes de 2012 o en una fecha anterior.

A partir del 15 de noviembre, sólo los importadores y exportadores que utilicen camiones más antiguos y más contaminantes para trasladar cargas hacia el Puerto y desde éste deberán pagar cargos por anticipado según el Programa de Camiones Limpios del Puerto de Long Beach. La fecha de vigencia anunciada originalmente se ha modificado, ya no es el 1 de noviembre. En la actualidad, todos los propietarios de las cargas reciben y pagan los cargos por adelantado, aunque luego se les reembolsa el dinero a aquéllos que utilizan camiones limpios o ferrocarril.

On October 19, the Port of Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners will hold its weekly meeting in the evening, rather than at its regularly scheduled afternoon hour, to make it easier for the public to attend. The Harbor Commission generally meets three times a month on Mondays, and is dark on the fourth Monday of the month. The first two meetings of the month will still be at the regular, 1 p.m. Monday time slot.

Fifteen shipping containers packed with dry foods, medicine, blankets and other essentials were loaded onto a ship at the Port of Long Beach today, October 14, and bound for victims in tsunami-stricken Samoa Islands. The effort was led by ILWU Local 13 and supported with in-kind donations from the Port of Long Beach, terminal operator International Transportation Service (ITS), and shipping lines Hamburg Sud and Polynesia Line.

The Port of Long Beach and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on October 8 announced a $40-million harbor dredging project that will improve navigation by removing and relocating nearly 1.5 million cubic yards of sediment from the sea floor. The dredging work, scheduled to begin in March of 2010, is being partially financed by federal stimulus funding. The projects will support about 180 jobs a year during the next two years.

El viernes 2 de octubre de 2009, las autoridades encargadas del control de la contaminación del aire del sur de California galardonaron al Puerto de Long Beach por transformarse en el primer puerto marítimo en el mundo en construir una terminal de embarque de petróleo que ofrece "alimentación eléctrica en tierra" no contaminante para mejorar la calidad del aire. Las funcionarios del Puerto y de BP America aceptaron el honor de parte del Distrito de Administración de la Calidad del Aire de la Costa Sur en la 21.ª ceremonia anual de los "Premios de Aire Limpio" celebrada en el centro de la ciudad de Los Angeles.

At its one-year anniversary, the Port of Long Beach Clean Trucks Program is on track to nearly achieve its goal of an 80 percent reduction in diesel truck pollution, two years ahead of schedule. The Port's Clean Trucks Program started October 1, 2008, with the aim of dramatically slashing by 2012 air pollution from the thousands of trucks that haul cargo containers to and from Port shipping terminals. The centerpiece of the program is a progressive ban to phase out the oldest, highest-polluting trucks in favor of trucks that meet tough 2007 federal emission standards.

The Port of Long Beach will hold a second public hearing on Wednesday, September 16, to gather public input on a proposal for an On-Dock Rail Support Facility that would help increase the use of on-dock trains and reduce the need for as many local truck trips near the Port. The hearing will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Port Administration Building, 925 Harbor Plaza, to gather comments and suggestions on what issues should be examined in a comprehensive environmental study of the proposal. Fifty-two percent of the container cargo was trucked by 2007 or newer vehicles for the week ending July 21, 2009 -- already meeting the 2012 deadline required under the Port of Long Beach's Clean Trucks Program. The newer trucks emit 80 percent fewer air pollutants than older trucks. The Port of Long Beach Command and Control Center has become the first building in the harbor district – and just the third in the City of Long Beach – to earn a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, an internationally recognized set of "green" standards in building construction. The Port of Long Beach recently won the "Sustainable Shipping Clean Air Award" for efforts to reduce air pollution from ships through slower speeds, cleaner fuels and shore power. The Port of Long Beach received a $4 million air quality grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on July 8 to replace or retrofit, with less polluting technology, more than 100 forklifts, tractors, tugboats and other older diesel-powered equipment at the Port. The grant is part of $25 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding to help California agencies reduce diesel exhaust.

Clean Energy Fuels has opened a new LNG and CNG fueling station at corner of Anaheim and 1st streets at the Port of Long Beach.
The station has two 25,000-gallon liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks, six LNG dispensers, and two compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensers and is open to trucks 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
This is the second station to serve the ports area for cleaner fuel burning trucks and the world's largest station of its kind.

The Port of Long Beach on July 1 welcomed the Auriga Leader, a car carrier ship partly powered by solar energy. It is a first-of-a-kind green technology application on a car carrier.
The Auriga Leader is outfitted with 328 solar panels that can generate up to 40 kilowatts, decreasing demand on the ship's diesel-powered auxiliary engines for electricity thus cutting down pollution.

The Federal Maritime Commission announced Tuesday, June 16 that it is withdrawing its lawsuit that had sought to block clean trucks initiatives at the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles. Aiming to develop a plan for a pollution-free cargo-moving system, the Port of Long Beach is calling for technology ideas to one day replace the diesel trucks that travel between Port marine terminals and a local rail yard. The Port officially issued a "Request for Concepts and Solutions," on June 3, 2009, outlining the goals and requirements of the project, known as the zero-emission container mover system (ZECMS). To help potential idea submitters, the Port held a "pre-submittal conference" on July 9, 2009, at Port of Long Beach headquarters. The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on Monday, May 18, 2009 approved an $881 million budget for the Port of Long Beach that reflects the sluggish state of world trade and reduced cargo revenue but maintains the Port's aggressive investment in environmental projects.
"Despite the downturn, the Port’s financial outlook is still strong. Thanks to years of sound fiscal management, we are able to continue to pursue the major projects that will allow this Port to modernize its facilities and reduce its environmental impact," said James C. Under elongated strands of stratus clouds, the USS Green Bay glided into the harbor past the Port of Long Beach's Gull Park at the tip of the Navy Mole at 3:35 p.m. Tuesday, with an escort of Long Beach Police, Coast Guard and Long Beach Fire vessels. A study is completed to prepare for a significant change in Port operations: Using electrical power for ships at berth rather than diesel-burning engines, a practice commonly known as "cold ironing." A strong earthquake estimated at a magnitude of 5.4 shook the Port of Long Beach at about 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008, forcing the evacuation of the Port Administration Building. There were no initial reports of damage or injuries. The earthquake was centered in the Chino Hills area of Southern California, about 40 miles from the Port.

A power outage that occurred on Terminal Island Wednesday morning left about 20 industrial businesses in the Port area temporarily without power. The outage did not impair marine terminals, ship navigation, rail or commuter traffic.
The outage occurred when contractor working at Pier S on Terminal Island accidentally hit a power pole guide wire near the Southern California Edison substation. There were no injuries as a result of the accident.
SCE expects to restore full power to all its customers by mid-day Thursday.

Amid strong demand for international products, nearly 7.3 million cargo containers moved through Port of Long Beach terminals in 2006 for a fifth straight year of record-breaking cargo movement. Port terminals moved 7.29 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) in 2006 – an increase of 8.7 percent over the previous record in 2005 of 6.71 million TEUs. Port terminals have increased the total number of TEUs, which includes import, export and empty containers, every year since 2001.

The Board of Harbor Commissioners voted January 22 to end an environmental review of a proposal by Sound Energy Solutions to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) importing facility at the Port of Long Beach, and issued the following statement:
“After deliberation, based upon an opinion from Long Beach City Attorney Robert Shannon, who concluded that the Environmental Impact Report on the proposed LNG project ‘is and in all likelihood will remain legally inadequate,’ and since an agreement between Sound Energy Solutions and the City does not appear to be forthcoming, the Board of Harbor Commissioners disapproves the project and declines to pursue further negotiations.”To view the City Attorney's opinion, click here.

Driving between San Pedro and downtown Long Beach on the weekend of January 19-21 is going to take longer than usual.
As part of a $65 million Ocean Boulevard construction project, a key interchange at the center of Terminal Island will be shut down from 7 p.m. Friday, January 19, until 5 a.m. Monday, January 22. Throughout the weekend, motorists driving between downtown Long Beach and San Pedro are advised to take Anaheim Street or Pacific Coast Highway.

Port of Long Beach officials praised a new state rule on cleaner-burning ship fuel, which took effect January 1, 2007.
The new regulation, adopted by the California Air Resources Board in 2005, requires large ocean-going vessels, including container and cruise ships, to use low-sulfur fuels in their auxiliary engines within 24 nautical miles of the California coastline. The regulation will reduce emissions of harmful diesel particulate matter (PM), smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SOx).

| Truck traffic returned to normal levels at the Port of Long Beach Tuesday following a one-day slowdown on Monday, May 1. While most truck drivers were not working Monday, longshore workers reported to Port shipping terminals to load and unload ships and trains. In anticipation of the work slowdown, shippers trucked more cargo than usual late last week and over the weekend. On Tuesday morning, the Port's terminal operators reported that truck traffic had returned to normal levels.
