The Port of Long Beach offers incentives to vessel operators who take action to help improve local air quality. These incentives and our other Green Port initiatives have helped the Port dramatically decrease air pollution from port-related operations.
The following incentives are available:
Vessel operators receive dockage rate reductions for slowing to 12 knots or less within 40 nautical miles of Point Fermin (near the entrance to the Harbor). Ships traveling more slowly produce less pollution; top participants also receive Green Flag Awards each year for their efforts.
Operators who bring the newest, cleanest vessels to the Port of Long Beach can receive up to $6,000 in incentives per ship call under this program. Tier 2 and Tier 3 engines dramatically reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide emissions.
Vessel Dockage Waiver Program
In conjunction with the Port's Green Flag Program and the state's "At-Berth Regulation," the Vessel Dockage Waiver Program rewards complying vessel operators with "free parking." Through June 2018, the Port will waive its dockage fees for vessels that both slow down 40 miles out from the harbor and plug into shore power, or use an equivalent emissions-reduction technology, at berth.
