The Port of Long Beach offers both high school and college internship programs.
The Port of Long Beach and Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network are proud to offer the Summer Youth Employment Program, an outstanding career exploration opportunity for current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Long Beach Unified School District’s service area. The eight-week program offers hands-on work experience and mentoring at the Port of Long Beach for those interested in careers in the goods-movement industry.
The program starts July 2, 2012, and concludes on August 24, 2012. Applicants must have reliable transportation to and from the Port. Applicants will need to complete an application and have at least three personal references. Selected youth will be required to have the National Work Readiness Credential issued by the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network. Selected youth will earn $9 an hour and work up to 30 hours per week.
Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network will conduct the National Work Readiness Credential (NWRC) training with potential candidates. The NWRC curriculum is designed to help youth gain the skills needed to successfully enter the workforce. Upon completion of the training, youth will be administered four assessments. Youth successfully completing the assessments will earn a Credential.
Applicants must:
- Be a current sophomore, junior or senior
- Be attending a high school in the Long Beach Unified
- School District service area
- Be in good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher)
- Have reliable transportation
- Be available July 2 – August 24, 2012
- Earn a National Work Readiness Credential

The Port of Long Beach's internship program is open to college undergraduate and graduate students and offers hands-on experience for those interested in careers in a variety of fields.
The program provides an outstanding educational and work experience for a select group of candidates in a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, surveying, environmental science, business, finance, communications and more.
